WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
2003, Melbourne, Victoria….4 guys who knew very little of each other were invited to assist Jamie Coyle in recording a 4 track EP he had written to perform in high schools around Melbourne.
The lyrics talked about his struggle with acceptance, his passion for surfing and his encounter with a God that wanted something to do with him.
With a growing need for more than just one man and his guitar and based on the connection that had begun at the recording session, the original 4 plus 1 went on to form Selahphonic.
All members had previously been in very different bands and wanted to do something unique; but each member shared a common vision ….to communicate to peoples’ ears, eyes and hearts.
Since then Selahphonic has become a “unique, powerful, emotional and confronting band”.
Through their live shows, whether in a high school classroom playing to 40 students or at a youth event playing to hundreds, the audience are connected both sonically and visually to the music and swept up in a journey of hope and freedom.
In November 2004 Selahphonic recorded their 2nd EP, “Songs of John Doe”. Throughout 2005 and 2006 they shared this journey with thousands of students across Australia, confronting the issues of existence, meaning and purpose.
In 2006 Steve Gisjbers joined as the new drummer and Matt Dickins, long time friend and bass player left to begin his family and take a job as a teacher, leaving his final legacy in their newly released third album “Dark Places and Great Escapes”.
Dark Places and Great Escapes is a journey into the pain, the void of emotion that keeps mankind held captive from being who they so desperately want be; themselves. What if people saw me for who I really was, if they saw my crap, my embarrassments, my struggles, who would want me, who would look at me the same.
I want a place that I can lay, a person I can lay next to who looks through me and see’s me.
Can the real Jesus, not the religious, hang or your wall, stick on your car Jesus, but the one who held cripples, touched lepers do anything for me?
“Those who look to him are radiant, their faces are never covered with shame”
